You've read (hopefully) about Beowulf and his adventures: He's ripped arms off, cut heads off, and poked a dragon. Some of you read it in one sitting and others did everything they could to avoid it. Now, it's time to express your true feelings for this Viking hunk. Comment on what you liked about it, hated about it, or whatever. Be honest! You won't in trouble for hating it or loving it. Again, 50 words. Please take a second to answer the poll question.

I for one LOVED Beowulf. Most people know I'm a closet nerd, which doesn't really put me in the closet. Anyways, Beowulf is so BA. This stud-muffin warrior OWNED a whole family of monsters, does it get better? He died an honorable death and he was a hero to the Danes and the Geats.
He was strong, courageous, handsome, awesome, and he was the ultimate leader.
Contrary to popular belief, it really isn't that hard to understand. I think that if it was written in today's dialect, everyone would love it. =]

It really wasnt all that bad.at first i wasn't even going to read it til i found out we had a quiz on it.lol but i liked how brave beowulf was, he defeated Grendel and his mother.Sad for the monsters good for the Danes and Geats(except one).lol.I was impressed at how easy the poem was to understand too.Usually i have a hard time interpreting everything but this seemed very modern in a way.And the battle scenes werent long winded either. It was straight to the point, i loved that. And Wiglaf is my hero:)

The story of Beowulf was great, but he presentation could have been a little more appealling to its intended audience. Most people would agree that the story of Beowulf was directed more towards men, to motivate men to be excellent. The fact that it is a poem draws many readers away, if however, the story was written as a normal story would be, like lines going across the entire page. In poem form I felt like I had to read the story in rhythm which through off my understanding of the novel.

I voted that it was ok.
I actually read the story and took notes in fear that I would forget peoples names. It wasn't that bad and in fact I kind of liked it. (geeky ol' Sara and her books!) My favorite was the end when Wiglaf randomly came in and was there at Beowulf's death. The old hero was bound to die at some point, and there Wiglaf (the cousin or whatever) came through and stayed at Beowulf's side and finished off the dragon. At this point I wanted to jump in and stab his so called "army" who cowarded thier way into the shadows of the woods and let Beowulf burn to death. People like that piss me off. I mean wouldn't you stick up for your mama if she were like, dying? I loved the fact that Wiglaf was there. Also I loved the fact that they built that thing (that building tower and dug the treasures in his memory so he could still guide the Geats. That's amazing. Truely inspiring. It's ultimately epic (hence the hero thing we did in class) what makes an epic movie epic? Smiles and smiles. Through it's blood and glory you can see the accomplishments. Oh! Also I liked in my section I did for my project, the last line where they said the geats would "sing, then they would sing the old songs as well..." in reference ( I believe) to his triumphs and his pride. It's a reflection of a true happy ending for the warrior.

Given the fact that it was a 4th century work of pop culture and that it had a purpose in being intertwined with christanity, all in all i would have to say that it was a preety good read. Not like i would just spend weeks looking for it a libraries and reasearch it. However if i was held at gunpoint and was forced to read a book, i would highly consider Beowulf. or a picture book. jk

  6. I honestly did not care for Beowulf. One I am not into Brittish Liturature now because of this. I must say that it was alot easier to read than other pieces of literature but not my cup of tea. I dont know why we have to read about him in the first place he didnt do any good for me they werent my enemys who knows if he didnt kill grendal and left it all be than grendals mom could have been a nice monster eventually.

I thought it was good. It wasn't that hard of a read. And yes i read it, even though I had no clue to half or the answers on the test...I think he was a good choice to kick off the hero theme. I wish I could fight a dragon that would be cool.

I thought it was good. Beowulf caught my eyes with all the interesting accomplishments he did, like deafeated all those mosnter alone. He showed true heroism with his courage & bravery by standing alone to all the family of monsters. & I agree with ddra usually I have a hard time with reading poems or storys but I really understood this.

i thought the idea of the story was ok, but i didn't really care for the way it was told. i would have prefered it if there were better visuals to go along with it. i also thought it was a little lame the way it was told, one guy doing everything by him self and fighting a dragon while he is 70 is a little cheesy. and the movie really sucked and Larvelle you are stupid, no one cares what you think about it. haha

i personally am not a beowulf fan. It might have been easier to read if it wasnt written like a poem. It took me like all week to read it cause i was so bored when i was reading. I honestly dont care about monsters or vikings. The movie probably would have been better.

I liked Beowulf, i didn't love it. I'm not a fan of poetry so that may have contributed a lot to it, but i do like epic battles and people getting eaten, all that good stuff. I don't know, i just think it would have been a lot better if it wasn't a poem.

  14. I loved beowulf. Once i got past my inability to comprehend some of the writing it turned out to be good. One of the quotes was my facebook status! It is very epic and Beowulf is a true epic hero. Even though to us now adays that seems insane to go around killing people, back then thats how things were. It was honorable. Also, its cool to see the difference in times from back then to now

So yeah i read it and it was okay. Its not something i would want to read on my own. Pretty much the only reason i read it was because we had to do all this work on it, and if i didnt read it then i would be totally clueless the whole period. lol But yeah it took me forever to read it too, maybe because it didnt really interest me. but i'll live on. its watev. peace and chicken greae. lmao

  17. Honestly I didnt read it. I watched the movie though and I found it to be GREAT. Im watching the movie right now. But as for the actual story....NOPE. It was way too difficult to read and I got a headache trying so I just let it go. Sorry to disapoint you Mr. Price but I thought you might have wanted to know the truth. Plus even if I would have lied and said I read it, when you grade my test you would have found out anyway.

For those who did't like it, glad your honest. For those who did like it. YAY! some ppl agree w/ me on that. I mean to say, in it's entire story thing, they should make another movie with no nakie ppl and actually STICK with the story. I bet the author would appreciate it. yepyep.

I totally want to be a viking now! I loved the story. It was awesome how Beowulf totally owned those monsters and his men. I am thinking of recruiting some of the freshman to be my little minions! hahaha! I did not like the king but that is probably just because I am more of the person to be out doing things like killing monsters rather than telling people to do it. I overall LOVED Beowulf!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. I enjoyed beowulf very much i thought he was alittle redic though with the ripping off of Grendels arm but it was still cool. I definately want to be a viking now and fight people naked jk. The ending wasnt all that great though it just kinda ended.. hes like i slayed grendel and her mom.. wait till im old oh here's a dragon im like 50 now better go fight it. What happend while he was king?

I didn't really like it. It is mostly because I don't like reading (I'm not very good at it). I liked talking about the book though. Maybe it is because I didn't quite get it when I read it, and after discussing it in class I got a better understanding. I guess I liked the plot and stuff but I didn’t like the wording or the lay out of the story.

Beowulf was eh... okay at best. Looking at it i would rather do something else than sit back and read something that is interpreted in more ways than one. It seemed just something of, oh im a hero, im going to go beat a few people down and be praised by some others. Its just one of those qualities i see as unimportant. Its a story that tried to work along side society, which isn't bad, as its how everything remembered is passed on. Wasn't too fond of the test thing either, caught me off guard to begin it, as i had to recall things that slipped by myself when reading the epic story of Beowulf. Would need two or three reads to actually get a hold of, something that others would dread to do... as a saying that is commonly used, 'Not my cup of tea.'

Yes, i am one of the ones who did not read the story and therefore failed the quiz. But from what we have talked about in class, Beowulf seems like a pretty cool dude. Even though he did the things he did to gain attention and be famous, he still kicked butt while doing it. Ripping off Grendel's arm was pretty epic if I do say myself. So that's all I have to say because I know nothing else :)

Honestly, Beowulf wasn't that bad. I liked the poem and what not. I especially like the Beowulf Vs. Grendel section. I could actually visualize was happening. However, I didn't like the little details I happend to miss being on the test, that was no good. But over all I did enjoy it because it wasnt like the other stories I have read in english that make me want to gouge my eyes out.

  29. It was ok i guess im mean honestly i think the Movie dipicted a better side of the book at lest from what we read in class to show the geats running away except Beowulfs loyal friend. But I think it also shows the true side of beowulf the simple side of life bores him and fighting wars is just no fun to him or worthy ton die for he believes his BA battle that sends him to the great Viking hall of heaven i dont remeber what its called off the top of my head right now but bthat seams to be the only thing that seams worthy to him to die for is monsters and dragons. go ahead Mr. Price i vote the movie better than the english part except for Angalina Joliy threw it all off but he makes up for it in the end.

I enjoyed the movie, and I'm not sure where the movie and book have gray area, but yeah. In generalization, Beowulf is an "epic hero of epicness" and in this you can generally expect the title to come with as much excessive violence and acts of strength and honor. He was certainly a valorous symbol. I AM BEOWULF!!!

Why was beowulf naked in that little movie clip we saw in class? That part still confuses me. Anyways, the sparknotes explanation made me think Beowulf was a pretty interesting book, it kept me reading more. I wish the language in the book was easier to read because I am a terrible reader and it seemed like a book I would enjoy if I could understand it. Yep. That anglo-saxon junks blows my mind.

  32. Ok well I read the story... well most of it, not like the last section. And it was alrite, a bit strange I guess I thought it would be harder to understand. And once you started reading it was hard to stop cause it felt like the words didn’t stop. And I thought the fighting scenes were easy to understand cause they were descriptive.

The story of Beowulf is one of the better epic poems. The plot runs smooth(though reading it in sections is less enjoyable then reading a whole epic)and Beowulf is one of the better protagonist, in that he doesn't care about anything other than his own glory. A story where the protagonist dies in glory is all the better.

I am going to be honest I did not read "Beowulf" but from reading other peoples comments it seems like I would of liked it. Thats all what Hayden told me about the story.. not sure if its true or not

    My real post is:
I definitely didnt read the story cuz i mean who really did?? but from what i know Beowulf is an epic hero. he likes to kill things while hes naked. Not sure if its cuz he likes showing off or cuz hes just poor. either way it makes him ten times more of an epic hero. the assignment that i did for this story were kinda fun. i wish i had read the story though. then maybe i wouldnt be writing a half a** review

Oh, you lazy people who didn't read Beowulf. It was a poem, and I read it in less than an hour. Definitely worth your time if your interested, but it's your loss, I guess...

Beowulf was actually pretty good. Easy, too, when you consider that the version our class read was a truncated (aha, vocab word) and translated one. A good online friend of mine and I occasionally speak to each other like this in our conversations. You know, because it's epic. I guess that practice and the lessons in class made it quite a breeze to comprehend for me.
Story-wise, it was epic, and I actually enjoyed reading it if not for the fact that I was slightly tired when doing so. But I knew that, in the end Beowulf would die in battle. Beowulf didn't seem the type to just crinkle up and die an old fossil. The only thing he lacked was real character development, or real imperfections; he already was complete, in a way.

To be honest, the only difficult thing for me was remembering the weird names. I only know Beowulf and Wiglaf with certainty, and that's because I did Beowulf vs. Death for the "Visualizing Beowulf" assignment.

Either way, it was pretty good. I know my online friend would get a good kick out of it too, so I'm looking forward to talking to him about it sometime.

I thought Beowulf was a pretty good read, if you're into that kind of thing. It's got a solid plotline and some awesome battle scenes. It's much better if you read the whole thing though,as opposed to the annoyingly shortened chapters we read. But I gotta say, I'm not too big on the the long-winded speeches that fill up a nice chunk of the poem. Other than that, I give Beowulf a thumbs up.

  41. okay to be honest i read just my part of it for my project but it just really didnt keep my attention. i tried to read it your short way but i still was not interested. it might just be me im not really into all that viking stuff. but of what i did read some parts were a little hard to understand. overall its was pretty easy. i did like though how beowulf was not just all into himself well it didnt seem like it to me. from my quotes that i used he seemed to be concerned about his followers and most of his towns people && i LOVED how he killed Grendel. ehh he was gross. i wouldnt chose to read it again on my own but if i had to i guess i would =)

I honestly didn't like "Beowulf". Beowulf only wanted fame and everything that came along with it. The only reason that he fought Grendel and Grendel’s mother was for the fame that would accompany him for defeating them. Up until the very end of the story all Beowulf cares about is the fame. Beowulf goes to fight the dragon knowing that he’s going to die but doesn’t care because people will remember him as a hero. What kind of hero goes to their death just worried about being remembered?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, I didn't actually read the book (or poem, whatever) but I assume it was garbage. I mean, if it found its way into a high school English textbook (especially one called "British Literature") then it had to have been pretty boring. Really, what good have the British ever given us?

Beowulf seemed pretty cool. I myself am not a fan of reading outside of the classroom. the scene that i actually did read made me feel pretty good about myself because i didn't understand it at all. Writers put too much thought into what they write, which makes it boring and causes me to feel drowsy. So pretty much i don't feel like writing a novel this time. BTW Kanye is a (innapropriate word that i'm not supposed to say so it really only counts for one word but looks like i'm typing a lot because i'm trying to explain this word but it's all in parenthesis and we're not allowed to say bad things about people i don't believe so i have to inadvertantly(SP?) say it...)

One of those stories that you get assigned in English class and quickly come to realize that you don't wanna read it. Thats kinda how any story is to me, but that's besides the point I'm trying to make. But I did see that movie clip in class where he ripped dude's arm off. 54. Reading Beowulf was surprisingly interesting. It was alot easier to read then other schoool assignments I have read and most of the where pretty basic and never really stood out. In this we got manly 8 pack abed men playing the harp, heads and arms being ripped/slash off here and there, a random dragon, and a poor little Domo beast who nobody loves except for his mother. It kept my attention for the most part and the story wasn't all that bad at all. I thought Beowolf was a complete waste of my time. Epic poems are about the stupidest thing someone could come up with. The whole story was stupid Beowolf trying to look all big and bad, killing monsters for his own glory. I don't think it's very heroic when the hero needs to be compensated for what he does.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Beowolf was undeniably a revolutionary concept being as its influence on modern day hero's was so great. Other than that fact, i thought the story to be just OK. i did, however, enjoy the intensity of the story. it seemed as if beowolf was just one action scene layered over another. I also felt that beowolf himself was quite corney. Especially when he would yell his name at the climax of certain events. I think he is just a strong guy who has no fear, alot of courage, and is completely vain.

Alright I personally loved Beowulf's character. I loved how b.a. he was. He definately made me want to be a viking. Just because of how amazing he was at killing anything that came his way to protect his people, and the fact that he was willing to die for them. Most of the story was actually kind of confusing but the battles were the most interesting parts to read. I hated all the crazy names that were impossible to pronounce.. kind of makes me not want to be a viking. But Beowulf is awesome!!!

(such as Thor) Many of them dolt with killing horrid beast, and dieing for the honor of death. But Beowulf was one of the more courageous fighters that I have ever read about. So I can’t sat that I really hated the book.
